Create an accountWhy Ride Downhill Without a Chain?

Over the past few years, a rather unusual challenge has been gaining popularity at bike parks: riding downhill without a chain. At first glance, the idea might seem strange. After all, bikes are made for pedaling! But once you're at the top of the mountain, the chain becomes practically useless—and removing it can actually offer a few advantages.
Why Remove the Chain?
When riding downhill (DH), pedaling sections are often limited. Once you're on the trail, gravity does most of the work. Removing the chain eliminates several small inconveniences:
- No risk of dropping or getting a jammed chain.
- No chain slap or drivetrain noise.
- Less mechanical friction.
- A drivetrain that’s protected from rock impacts.
- A quieter, smoother riding experience.
The result is a simpler, quieter bike that's completely dedicated to going downhill.
A Challenge That Puts the Rider to the Test
Riding without a chain isn't just about mechanics. It's also a great way to work on your riding technique.
Without the ability to accelerate by pedaling, every movement counts. You have to:
- Choose the best lines.
- Carry as much speed as possible.
- Pump the terrain effectively.
- Anticipate obstacles.
- Maintain your momentum from top to bottom.
The result? A cleaner, smoother run—and often a faster one than you might expect.
The Chainless Challenge
The concept has become a friendly challenge at several mountain bike parks. The principle is simple:
- Remove your chain.
- Pick a trail.
- Ride down as fast as possible... without pedaling!
It's accessible to riders of all levels. The fastest riders can chase the perfect time, while everyone else can simply enjoy the challenge and have fun trying something different with friends.
