Nitrogen is one of them.

Originally launched as Argon 18’s aerodynamic race bike, the Nitrogen quickly built a reputation among cyclists looking for speed. It proved itself in the professional peloton and became one of the iconic models of the Quebec-based brand.

Then, the Nitrogen disappeared from the lineup.

For several years, Argon 18 took its aerodynamic range in a different direction, until the Nitrogen officially made its big comeback in September 2025.

But make no mistake: this isn’t simply an old model brought back with a few updates.

The new Nitrogen Pro is a complete reinterpretation of the Nitrogen, developed over three years and representing thousands of hours of research, development, and testing.

And honestly? The result is hard to ignore.

Argon 18 describes the Nitrogen Pro as the fastest road bike the brand has ever designed. The company claims a gain of up to 24 watts at 45 km/h compared with the Sum Pro, its previous high-end aerodynamic race bike.

But the numbers only tell part of the story.

What makes the new Nitrogen Pro particularly interesting is the approach behind its development. Argon 18 didn’t simply set out to create a more aerodynamic frame. The brand developed the bike as a complete system, optimizing the interaction between the frame, wheels, tires, cockpit, rider position, and real-world riding conditions.

The result: a bike designed not only to be fast on paper, but fast in the real world.

And there’s a particularly telling detail that highlights this obsession with aerodynamics: the Nitrogen Pro is now being used as a reference platform for testing aerodynamic wheels in the wind tunnel.

In 2026, Cyclingnews used the Nitrogen Pro as its test bike when comparing different aerodynamic wheelsets. The goal was to measure wheel performance in a controlled environment, using the Nitrogen Pro as the common platform.

In other words, this is no longer simply the return of a legendary bike. This is an entirely new Nitrogen, designed from the ground up as a complete aerodynamic machine.

And that’s where the story gets really interesting.

Before the Pro, There Was the Nitrogen

The original Nitrogen already had one clear mission: go fast.

Its aerodynamic design and race-focused handling earned it a place among professional riders. But nearly a decade later, expectations for an aerodynamic race bike have changed dramatically.

Wider tires. Greater integration. One-piece cockpits. Bike-and-wheel system optimization. Better fit adaptability. And above all, a focus on performance in real-world conditions—not just inside a laboratory.

That’s precisely where the new Nitrogen Pro stands apart.

Argon 18 didn’t simply pull the Nitrogen out of the archives. The brand practically started from a clean sheet of paper.

And this time, every detail was designed with speed in mind.

24 Watts at 45 km/h… But It’s Not Just About the Numbers

On paper, the Nitrogen Pro delivers a claimed 24-watt gain at 45 km/h compared with the Sum Pro.

But what’s particularly impressive is how the bike feels on the road.

Once you get around 37 or 38 km/h, you really begin to understand the potential of the Nitrogen Pro. The bike seems to want to keep accelerating. The faster you go, the more it feels like the bike is asking for more.

It’s a sensation that’s difficult to explain until you’ve experienced it: the Nitrogen Pro feels like it’s in its element when you’re riding fast.

And we’ve had the chance to experience that for ourselves.

On Tuesday, August 18, during our weekly group ride, Argon 18 was on-site with its demo bikes. We had the privilege of having three of our customers test the new Nitrogen during the ride.

The reactions? Let’s just say they quickly understood why Argon 18 brought the Nitrogen name back.

The speed, stiffness, efficiency, and sensation of riding a bike that simply wants to accelerate made a strong impression.

And we’re certainly not the only ones impressed. Several members of our race team are now riding the Nitrogen, as are several members of our own team.

And honestly? They’re absolutely loving it.

The comment we keep hearing is simple:

“You have to ride it to understand.”

More Than 130 Aerodynamic Profiles Studied

The new Nitrogen Pro didn’t become aerodynamic by accident.

Argon 18 studied more than 130 aerodynamic profiles during development. Every element of the bike was analyzed and optimized with the goal of reducing drag.

The fork is wide and highly profiled. The cockpit is fully integrated into a single piece. The bike uses a bottle-and-cage system designed to work specifically with the frame. Even the pigments used in the paint were selected to help minimize weight.

Every detail was considered.

The goal wasn’t simply to create a good-looking aerodynamic bike, but to design a bike where every component contributes to overall performance.

And it shows.

The Nitrogen Pro looks imposing, modern, and incredibly distinctive. It doesn’t look like a traditional road race bike—and that’s exactly the point.

Wheels Developed with Scope

One of the most interesting aspects of the Nitrogen Pro project is the importance placed on the wheels.

Argon 18 worked with Scope to develop a combination specifically optimized for the bike.

The wheels feature Scope’s Aerodynamic Surface Layer technology, recognizable by its fish-scale-inspired texture. This patented technology was designed to reduce drag and improve stability, particularly in crosswinds.

Because an aerodynamic bike shouldn’t only be fast with a perfectly head-on wind.

It also needs to remain stable and efficient in the conditions we actually encounter on the road.

Once again, Argon 18’s approach is clear: optimize the complete system rather than a single component.

Why 30 mm Tires on Such an Aerodynamic Bike?

For a long time, performance was associated with narrow tires.

Today, things have changed.

The Nitrogen Pro was developed around 30 mm tires because wider tires can offer an excellent balance of rolling resistance, comfort, grip, and stability.

On Quebec roads, that’s far from a minor detail.

A slightly wider tire can better absorb imperfections in the road and provide greater control without necessarily sacrificing speed.

The Nitrogen Pro shows that a pure performance bike no longer has to be uncomfortable in order to be fast.

3D Fit System and Modern Geometry

Aerodynamic bikes sometimes have a reputation for being extremely aggressive and difficult to adjust.

Argon 18 wanted to avoid that limitation.

Thanks to its 3D Fit System, the Nitrogen Pro offers several options for adapting the rider’s position.

That’s particularly important because an aerodynamic bike can only truly be fast if the rider is able to maintain an efficient and sustainable position.

The most aerodynamic frame in the world doesn’t mean much if the rider’s position isn’t right.
