Bike Theft: Why Should You Register Your Bike with Project 529?

Your bike represents a significant investment. Whether it’s a road bike, mountain bike, e-bike, or simply your trusty everyday bike, nobody wants to see it disappear.

That’s why Cycles Dupuis is proud to be an official partner of Project 529, a platform dedicated to preventing bike theft and helping recover stolen bikes.

And the good news: you don’t have to live in Repentigny to benefit from it!

What is Project 529?

Project 529 is a platform that allows cyclists to register their bikes in a dedicated database. You can add important information about your bike, including its brand, model, serial number, and photos that can help identify it.

Why is this important?

In the event of a theft, having all this information in one place makes it much easier to identify the bike. If a stolen bike is recovered by police or a member of the community, the registered information can help quickly identify and return it to its owner.

The Repentigny Police Service also recommends using Project 529 and notes that a complete record containing the serial number, bike details, and photos can help with the identification and return of a recovered bike.

What about the Project 529 sticker?

You’ve probably already seen these small stickers on some bikes.

The 529 Shield is a sticker featuring a QR code that allows a registered bike to be quickly identified. It also serves as a visible deterrent, indicating that the bike is registered and can be identified.

According to data published by Project 529, bikes equipped with a 529 Shield are twice as likely to be recovered as those without one.

At Cycles Dupuis, we sell Project 529 stickers in-store and online. Once your bike is registered, you can easily add this extra layer of protection.

The Repentigny Police Service is part of the project

Project 529 works through a network that brings together cyclists, bike shops, and police services.

The Repentigny Police Service is an official Project 529 partner. You can therefore add it as a partner organization when registering your bike. This allows the police service to be notified of a theft report and to contact the owner if the bike is recovered.

And even if you don’t live in Repentigny, you can still use Project 529. The platform operates across North America and brings together hundreds of bike shops, organizations, and police partners.

A Project 529 presentation at Cycles Dupuis

On July 15, we had the pleasure of welcoming representatives from the Repentigny Police Service to our shop to present Project 529 to our cycling community.

The goal was simple: explain how the platform works, answer cyclists’ questions, and above all, remind everyone of the importance of registering their bike before a theft occurs.

Because once a bike is gone, it can be much more difficult to gather all the information needed to identify it.

The numbers tell the story

Project 529 has built a significant community of cyclists and partners across North America.

3.3+ million
bikes are currently registered in the Project 529 registry.

801
partners are part of the network, including bike shops, organizations, and police services.

40%
reduction in bike theft in cities actively using Project 529, according to data published by the platform.

According to Project 529 data from more than 35,000 theft cases, bikes equipped with a 529 Shield are twice as likely to be recovered.

How can you protect your bike?

It only takes a few minutes.

  1. Register your bike with Project 529.
Add your serial number, contact information, photos, and bike details.
  2. Add the Repentigny Police Service as a partner, when applicable, to help facilitate communication in the event of a theft or recovery.
  3. Add a 529 Shield to your bike.
The sticker makes it easy to identify your bike as registered.
  4. Keep your information up to date.
If you change bikes, contact information, or make significant component changes, remember to update your registration.

A registered bike is easier to identify

Project 529 obviously doesn’t replace a good lock and proper bike-security habits. However, it’s a simple, quick, and accessible measure that can increase the chances of a stolen bike being identified and returned to its owner.

At Cycles Dupuis, we believe it’s important to do our part to protect the cycling community.

Haven’t registered your bike yet? Now is the time.

And if you’d like to add a Project 529 sticker, stop by our shop or purchase one directly from our online store.

Registering your bike takes just a few minutes. If it’s ever stolen, those few minutes could make all the difference.
