Create an accountThe electric road bike: Redefining your limits

In the world of cycling, the arrival of electric assistance has long been a hot topic of discussion. You often hear comments like “I’m not there yet” or “I’m afraid I’ll lose the joy of the effort.” It’s completely normal to have reservations about a technology that changes long-standing habits.
Yet at Cycles Dupuis, we often notice that for many of our customers, trying it once simply means rediscovering the joy of riding—without the usual barriers.
Why switch to electric assistance?
An electric road or gravel bike isn’t there to replace your legs, but to support them. It smooths out the moments that sometimes make us hesitate to go for a ride:
-
Keeping up with a partner or a group
The perfect tool to ride with faster friends without spending every ride in the red zone. -
Taming the elements
Headwinds and 10% climbs are no longer discouraging obstacles, but minor inconveniences. -
Mastering technical terrain
With an electric gravel bike, soft sand sections and technical forest climbs become fluid. You’ll go places you never would have dared before. -
Riding farther
Cover up to 100 km with the same level of fatigue you’d normally feel after 60 km. -
Commuting (“Bike to work”)
Arrive at the office fresh and energized, even on hilly routes—while leaving the car at home.
Hub motor vs. Mid-drive motor: what’s the difference?
The motor’s position drastically changes the bike’s behavior and riding feel.
1. Mid-drive motor (Crankset)
Found on most Trek models.
-
Ride feel: The most natural sensation, as the motor responds precisely to how hard you pedal.
-
Performance: Delivers higher torque (Nm), ideal for steep climbs.
-
Stability: Lowers the center of gravity, providing outstanding handling.
-
Maintenance: Easier rear tire changes in case of a flat, since the wheel is standard.
-
Upgradability: Allows replacement of stock wheels with carbon wheels.
2. Hub motor (Rear wheel)
Often chosen for light weight and discretion
(e.g. Devinci E-Hatchet, Giant Defy E+, Liv Avail E+, Argon 18 Subito)
-
Ride feel: A sensation of being propelled or “pushed from behind.”
-
Aesthetics: Very quiet, allowing the bike to keep the look of a traditional model.
-
Constraint: In case of a flat, wheel removal can take a bit longer due to electrical connections.
Protecting your investment: Maintenance
An electric bike requires a bit more attention than a traditional bike, especially when it comes to the drivetrain.
-
Drivetrain
The motor adds extra stress to the chain and cassette. Regular cleaning and lubrication are essential to prevent premature wear. -
Cleaning
Never use a high-pressure washer. A bucket of soapy water and a sponge are more than enough. Avoid spraying directly at the charging ports and display. -
Winter storage
This is critical. To maximize battery life, never allow it to freeze. Store the bike (or battery) in a temperature-controlled environment and keep the charge level between 40% and 60% during long periods of inactivity.
A long-term investment (and peace of mind)
It can be tempting to turn to inexpensive electric bikes sold online or in big-box stores, but there’s a downside.
-
Serviceability
Many repair shops refuse to work on these bikes for safety and insurance reasons. Replacement parts are often unavailable, and systems may not be certified. -
Local support
By choosing established brands like Giant, Liv, Argon 18, Devinci, or Trek, you ensure a durable bike backed by a manufacturer’s warranty. At Cycles Dupuis, we don’t just sell bikes—we provide access to parts, software updates, and expert mechanical service to ensure your bike keeps running for years to come.
